EXPERIENCED PRACTITIONERS
Nigel King as a practitioner and academic has studied interviewing techniques for many years. During his police service he reviewed in excess of 400 video interviews. He has been commended by a Crown Court Judge “for the difficult interviewing of children, producing videos which were wholly professional and a model of what is required in these cases, where the defendants entered guilty pleas.” He devised and delivered training to police officers under both the ‘Memorandum of Good Practice on Video Recorded Interviews with Child Witnesses for Criminal Proceedings’ (1992) and ‘Achieving Best Evidence in Criminal Proceedings: Guidance for Vulnerable or Intimidated Witnesses, including Children’ (2002).
TRAINING AND ASSESSMENT
Children’s evidence presented to the criminal and civil court is often the principal part of the case. The interviewing officer is required to obtain evidence from the witness that will be acceptable to the court. Consequently, the maintenance of high standards of video interview is of vital importance. Consultancy staff have conducted many video interviews with children, reviewed in excess of 400 video interviews and studied the subject academically. They have trained police officers and social workers to conducted video interviews in the UK and Europe. Staff have the experience and knowledge to review video recorded evidence and provide both initial and refresher training to ensure that interviews are conducted in accordance with the ‘Achieving Best Evidence…’ guidance.
