Investigative video interviews with children and vulnerable adults
During his police service Nigel has conducted interviews, reviewed in excess of 400 video interviews and studied the subject academically. He has trained police officers to conduct video interviews in the UK and Europe. The maintenance of a high standard of video recorded evidence is vital in both criminal and civil proceedings. Nigel has the experience and knowledge to review video recorded evidence and provide both initial and refresher training to ensure that interviews are conducted in accordance with the ‘Achieving Best Evidence’ guidance.
Development of multi-agency working – practices/systems and procedures
Working with professionals in different agencies is a vital component when enquiring into reports of abuse and criminal offences against children and vulnerable adults. As a practitioner has the experience of developing mutual respect, leading to efficient and effective working with professionals from different agencies. Nigel has constructed working procedures and inspected and audited systems in the UK and Europe.
Development of communication/interviewing/witness management skills
The investigation of child abuse and sex crime requires the use of skills to manage traumatised victims, parents or carers. The first contact with victims and their family and subsequent welfare issues have a significant impact on the successful outcome of the case. It is also necessary to develop techniques to engage with and interview persons suspected of abusing children. These skills can also be developed for the management of convicted sex offenders. Nigel has a wealth of practical experience and academic research to develop officers interviewing skills.
Investigating serious assaults/life threatening events/sudden infant death
Serious assaults on children, life threatening incidents with babies and sudden infant deaths are exceptional events in most police areas. Senior Investigating Officer’s and many police investigators rarely have to deal with such cases. Nigel has the experience and knowledge to provide officers with an understanding of the intricacies of such enquiries and develop the skills required when dealing with these events.
