BACKGROUND

Nigel is a specialist in matters relating to child protection, inter-agency working and the management of convicted child sex offenders. Nigel’s experience comes from his police background, retiring in 2003 after serving for over 33 years. As an operational detective he spent many years investigating many child sexual abuse cases and investigations into non-accidental injuries to children, including sudden infant deaths and incidents of fabricated and induced illness. He developed efficient and effective working practices with other agencies. Nigel’s expertise was recognised nationally when he was seconded to Her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary as a police inspector for the first national multi-agency ‘Safeguards for Children’ inspection. The UK Central Police Training and Development Authority have contracted Nigel as an Associate Tutor. Nigel is a skilled facilitator combining his practical experience with academic research and implements training based on the ‘real world’. He is an accomplished speaker and given presentations at a number of police and multi-agency conferences across the UK and international events in Sweden and Germany.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Investigative video interviews with children and vulnerable adults

During his police service Nigel has conducted interviews, reviewed in excess of 400 video interviews and studied the subject academically. He has trained police officers to conduct video interviews in the UK and Europe. The maintenance of a high standard of video recorded evidence is vital in both criminal and civil proceedings. Nigel has the experience and knowledge to review video recorded evidence and provide both initial and refresher training to ensure that interviews are conducted in accordance with the ‘Achieving Best Evidence’ guidance.

Development of multi-agency working – practices/systems and procedures

Working with professionals in different agencies is a vital component when enquiring into reports of abuse and criminal offences against children and vulnerable adults. As a practitioner has the experience of developing mutual respect, leading to efficient and effective working with professionals from different agencies. Nigel has constructed working procedures and inspected and audited systems in the UK and Europe.

Development of communication/interviewing/witness management skills

The investigation of child abuse and sex crime requires the use of skills to manage traumatised victims, parents or carers. The first contact with victims and their family and subsequent welfare issues have a significant impact on the successful outcome of the case. It is also necessary to develop techniques to engage with and interview persons suspected of abusing children. These skills can also be developed for the management of convicted sex offenders. Nigel has a wealth of practical experience and academic research to develop officers interviewing skills.

Investigating serious assaults/life threatening events/sudden infant death

Serious assaults on children, life threatening incidents with babies and sudden infant deaths are exceptional events in most police areas. Senior Investigating Officer’s and many police investigators rarely have to deal with such cases. Nigel has the experience and knowledge to provide officers with an understanding of the intricacies of such enquiries and develop the skills required when dealing with these events.
